Colombia is a tropical country with a lot of diversity in its regions. About 80% of the rural territory is below 1,600 meters above sea level, which makes it an optimal place for the proliferation of diseases such as malaria.
Malaria is a disease caused by a parasite of the genus Plasmodium, which can be commonly transmitted by the bite of the female Anopheles mosquito. Among the most common symptoms of the disease, which appear a week after acquiring the parasite, are fever, headache, chills, vomiting, fatigue, and difficulty breathing.
The main malaria transmission foci in the country are found in the Pacific Region (Departments of Chocó, Cauca, Nariño and the district of Buenaventura), followed by the Urabá – Bajo Cauca – Alto Sinú region (Antioquia and Córdoba), Amazonia, Orinoquia – Central East and Atlantic.
Understanding
If you plan to visit a malaria endemic area in the coming weeks, such as those mentioned above, do not forget to take certain precautions into account and take some preventive treatment against malaria or chemoprophylaxis.
In Colombia, and in most Latin American countries, there are very few alternatives for the prevention of malaria. This is due to the resistance profile that the parasite presents in our region and due to the shortage of medicines. For this reason, we recommend you schedule a consultation with one of our English-speaking doctors so that they can guide you and formulate the right medication.
Recommendations
Do not hesitate to contact us and do not forget:
1. Use a mosquito net to avoid mosquito bites while you sleep.
2. Avoid sleeping outside the house.
3. Use of appropriate clothing: long sleeves and long pants, in transmission areas.
4. Use repellents, especially those containing DEET (Diethyl-toluamide).
5. In endemic areas, do not expose yourself to mosquito bites, especially in the early hours of the morning (5:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m.) and at night (5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.)
6. Avoid stagnant water tanks near the home.
7. If you have traveled in the last 15 days to endemic areas with active malaria transmission and have fever, chills, headache, and general discomfort, seek medical help to rule out infection.
8. Provide the medical personnel with the information requested about the origin, during the last 15 days, especially if you have been in areas with active transmission.
9. In case of being diagnosed with malaria, ingest the complete treatment.
10. Do not self-medicate.
